Water is the foundation of life however the sad reality is that today - At least 1.8 Billion globally use a contaminated drinking source. Every minute a child dies due to consumption of contaminated water.

SYF believes that no-one should be deprived of a basic need of survival. More than 840,000 people die every year due to water related diseases. Tharparkar in Pakistan is spread over 22,000 square kilometres with a population of about 1.5 million residing in 2,300 villages and urban settlements.

In many families, women and girls fetch water for the family every day from a communal source that is located far away. This takes hours, depriving them of a profitable working time or education. Constant lifting and carrying of heavy water pots cause health problems, particularly among pregnant women.

• The social life of villagers is also restricted due to lack of adequate water.
• This especially affects women, who are responsible for carrying water.
• Young children often have to sacrifice their education due to the responsibility of fetching water.
